Laser Therapy for Pseudofolliculitis Barbae (PFB)

Laser therapy for the treatment of pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB) of the face and neck is a covered benefit for active duty service members (ADSMs) only. Therapy is covered when recommended by the ADSM’s military hospital or clinic provider and he/she meets the following criteria:

• There is a safety risk in operational, maintenance and training environments where the wearing of breathing protection may be required.
• The ADSM has been diagnosed with PFB of the face and neck and has failed conservative therapy.
• The ADSM’s military PCM has referred the case to a military dermatologist for an in-person, telephone or telehealth consultation and he/she has recommended laser therapy.

If the laser therapy is not available at the military hospital or clinic, he/she will be referred to a TRICARE-authorized network dermatology provider for care.
