Frequently Asked Questions

Routine preventive health screenings are crucial to maintain your health, prevent disease and live a healthy life. Do you know many important preventive screening services are available at no out-of-pocket cost to you through TRICARE? Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about preventive screenings.

What are preventive health screenings?

Preventive health screenings are an easy and effective way to prevent serious illnesses before they occur. For example, a colonoscopy can find polyps before they become cancerous. Screenings can also identify problems when they are most treatable and help prevent any long-term complications.

Even if no concerns are identified, screenings can help people understand their risks so they can take the right steps towards a healthier future.

I do not have any symptoms and I feel fine. Do I still need these screenings?

Yes. Many people are still at risk for diseases such as cancer and heart disease, although they many never experience symptoms.

What screenings do I need and are they covered by my TRICARE plan?

You should always consult with your doctor as to which screening schedule is best for you. To learn more about the benefit coverage, visit TRICARE's Covered Services page.

I'd prefer a female practitioner to do my screenings, but my doctor is male. Can I choose who I want to perform screenings?

Depending on your TRICARE plan, you may be able to see a different primary care practitioner. (Primary care includes family practitioners, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, obstetricians/gynecologists (OB/GYNs), just to name a few.) Check the Prior Authorization, Referral and Benefits Tool to determine if you require an approval from Health Net Federal Services, LLC to see a different provider for screening services.

Health care is already so expensive. How much will these screenings cost me?

For most preventive services there is no cost to you when you receive the services from a network provider. However, there may be a copayment or cost share for any resulting treatment or follow-up care. For example, a biopsy or follow-up diagnostic mammogram is not considered preventive, even if performed during the same preventive care visit. Therefore, the applicable copayment or cost share would apply.
