What Causes Heart Failure?

Conditions that damage or overwork the heart muscle can cause heart failure. Over time, the heart will weaken and become unable to fill with and/or pump blood as well as it should.

There are multiple causes for the development of heart failure. Some of the most common include:

  • Coronary artery disease
  • Heart attack history
  • Heart valve disease
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Other heart conditions or diseases

For more information about causes associated with heart failure, see the "Causes" and "Risk Factors" sections of Heart Failure.
