The Department of Defense will soon be launching its new military electronic health record – MHS GENESIS – at military hospitals and clinics in your area. We offer the following information to help you understand what MHS GENESIS is and how its rollout may impact your practice.

MHS GENESIS is the military’s new electronic health record – the system that will track TRICARE beneficiary treatments, record prescriptions, and allow doctors and nurses at military hospitals and clinics to document every facet of patient care.

How is MHS GENESIS being rolled out?
The Department of Defense (DoD) launched MHS GENESIS at four initial sites in 2017. Additional waved rollouts will continue through 2024. On Sept. 7, 2019, the DoD is deploying MHS Genesis to the following locations:

  • Travis Air Force Base (Fairfield, California)
  • Presidio of Monterey Army Base (Monterey, California)
  • Naval Air Station Lemoore (Lemoore, California)
  • Mountain Home Air Force Base (Mountain Home, Idaho)

What are expected patient impacts due to the MHS GENESIS deployment?
Patients can expect an initial delay with appointments (reduced appointment availability, wait times) and prescription fill time as MHS GENESIS is deployed and staff at the military facilities get used to the new system. The DoD does not anticipate these delays to be long-lasting.

What are expected civilian provider impacts due to the MHS GENESIS deployment?
Correspondence: Referral reference numbers on determination letters will look slightly different (rather than sectioned 15-digit numbers, they will be 14-digit numbers). Additionally, if the referring facility notates a physician’s electronic signature, you’ll see this in the “Reason for Request” section of the determination letter.

Patient increase: Network civilian specialists may see an uptick in patient referrals from the military clinics as a result of reduced appointment availability. Urgent care centers near impacted facilities also may see an increased volume in TRICARE patients. Clear and legible report requirements remain in place.
