Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans are a limited benefit and may be covered for:

  • evaluation of ischemic heart disease 
  • diagnosis and management of seizure disorders 
  • the following malignancies: bladder (metastatic), lung, lymphoma, pancreas, differentiated thyroid (follicular, papillary and Hurthle cell), gastrointestinal stromal tumor, ovarian cancer, and recurrent colorectal cancer 
  • diagnosis, staging, restaging, and monitoring of oncologic indications when supported by National Comprehensive Cancer clinical practice guidelines

PET scans are not a covered benefit for: 

  • The following malignancies:
    • gastric
    • differentiated thyroid and medullary cell thyroid (initial diagnosis)
    • colorectal (initial diagnosis and monitoring of treatment)
    • renal mass or possible renal cell carcinoma recurrence (diagnosis)
  • The following non-malignancies: 
    • Alzheimer's disease
    • Fronto-temporal dementia
    • dementia
