Applied Behavior Analysis
The Comprehensive Autism Care Demonstration (Autism Care Demonstration) provides TRICARE reimbursement for applied behavior analysis (ABA) services to TRICARE-eligible beneficiaries diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The Autism Care Demonstration was effective Oct. 20, 2014, and currently runs through Dec. 31, 2023.
Behavior analysis is the scientific study of the principals of learning and behavior, specifically about how behavior affects, and is affected by, past and current environmental events in conjunction with biological variables. ABA is the application of those principles and research findings to bring about meaningful changes in socially important behaviors in everyday settings.
ABA by a licensed and/or certified behavior analyst focuses on treating behavior difficulties by changing an individual’s environment (such as shaping behavior patterns through reinforcement and consequences). A change in behavior is measured by data collection and graphic analysis. Board Certified Behavior Analysts® focus on specific strategies that include, but are not limited to, shaping behavior patterns through reinforcement and consequences, differential schedules of reinforcement, discrete trial teaching, natural environmental training, and pivotal response training.
ABA is delivered optimally when family members/caregivers actively participate by consistently reinforcing the ABA interventions in the home setting in accordance with the prescribed treatment plan (TP) developed by the behavior analyst.
The overall goal of ABA is to decrease challenging/maladaptive behavior and teach appropriate replacement behavior to improve the quality of life of the beneficiary and their family and caregivers, so direct therapy is no longer needed.
