TENS Treatment for Low Back Pain
Tuesday, June 23, 2020
As of June 1, 2020, TRICARE no longer covers transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) for the treatment of low back pain. For beneficiaries who previously received approval from Health Net Federal Services, LLC (HNFS) for TENS for low back pain, we are updating open authorizations with dates beyond June 1 to reflect a May 31, 2020 end date. Revised authorization details will be viewable online in the coming weeks. Log in to use our Authorization Status tool.
Per TRICARE policy, as of June 1, 2020, TENS for low back pain are no longer covered, regardless of any approved, active authorization HNFS may have issued prior to June 1. This exclusion includes related supplies and physical therapy visits when the only treatment provided is TENS for low back pain.
Beneficiaries previously prescribed TENS for low back pain should discuss alternate treatment methods with their provider to avoid unexpected out-of-pocket costs.
