Getting Care – TRICARE Select Plans (including TRICARE Reserve Select and TRICARE Retired Reserve)

How to Get Care

TRICARE Reserve Select (TRS), TRICARE Retired Reserve (TRR) and TRICARE Select programs (including TRICARE Young Adult Select) are fee-for-service plans. When using one of these plans:

  • You may visit any network or non-network provider as long as he or she is TRICARE authorized. You do not have a primary care manager (PCM), so you do not need a referral for care except for applied behavior analysis (ABA) services. Some services do require an authorization

Learn about benefits on TRICARE's Covered Services page. For cost-share and deductible information, visit TRICARE's Costs & Fees page.

Where to Get Care

One of the advantages of TRS, TRR and TRICARE Select programs is an almost unrestricted choice of providers. With a few exceptions, any state-licensed or nationally-certified provider can be a TRICARE-authorized provider. Here are resources for locating authorized providers:

Military Hospitals and Clinics – As a TRICARE beneficiary, you have access to some of the best medical care in the country. You can get care at military hospitals and clinics on a space available basis. If you live near a military hospital or clinic, it should be your first source for treatment, especially for specialty care when available. There is no cost for outpatient services and inpatient services only have a small copayment per day. Find a military hospital or clinic by using TRICARE’s Military Hospital and Clinic Locator.

TRICARE Network Providers – By using providers from the Network Provider Directory, you have lower out of pocket costs and will not have to submit your own TRICARE claims. Search our Network Provider Directory.

TRICARE Non-Network Providers

  • Participating Providers: These providers submit claims to TRICARE and agree to accept the TRICARE-allowed amount as payment in full minus deductibles, copayments and cost-shares. We recommend contacting your provider to determine if they accept TRICARE patients and accept assignment on TRICARE claims.
  • Nonparticipating Providers: These providers do not bill TRICARE. You may be required to pay for services upfront and in full, and submit a claim to TRICARE for reimbursement. Nonparticipating providers may bill you up to an additional 15% above the TRICARE allowed amount.
